  Benjamin: Sorry, but I can't understand this phrase, "both sets of characters".

  I had been talking about simplified and tradition characters.  When Istarted studying Chinese I did not know about the two types of characters.  So, when I said I want to learn "both sets of characters" I mean I want to learn both simplified and traditional characters.

  One of the fun things about learning another language is finding out how other people use words.   By the way, for the phrase 学英语的目的是 we would say "self-improvement".  This just sounds more natural to a native speaker.
